The first USA Wheel Gymnastics Championship occurred on March 1st, 2003. The competitors trained hard for the several weeks prior to the competition. Several teams were represented, including the Gamma Phi Circus, Triton Circus Troupers, Circus Jenzac, and the University of Illinois. Men's straight line competed first, and Craig Sherwood ranked third on the scoreboard after a serious ankle injury during practice, while Jim Larson, new to the sport this last fall, received the silver medal, and Rich Tepavchevich won the gold medal for his routine. Both Keith Matuga and Ryan Balfanz showed great promise in their routine. The next competition was women's straight line. In a very close competition, Lisa Burns took the gold medal over Sandy Athey who won silver. Both competitors showed great skill and control. Men's vaulting competition proved to be most enlightening with Keith Matuga taking the bronze, Jim Larson taking the silver, and Ryan Balfanz taking the gold medal. This was an extraordinary feat for all who competed as they worked very hard on learning their vaulting routines for the several days prior to the competition. Female spiral competition displayed Kelly Rushing accomplishing a difficult routine. She received a gold medal for her effort, which is also an indication of her hard work for the last several years. Men's spiral competition was shown to be most remarkable. Rich Tepavchevich took his second medal of the night with a bronze, Ryan Balfanz asserted himself to a silver medal and Jason Nolan displayed remarkable agility to win the gold medal. Jim Larson, Keith Matuga, and Craig Sherwood all showed great potential as well. As a result of the competition, Jason Nolan, Craig Sherwood, Rich Tepavchevich, and Lisa Burns were qualified by the National Technical Committee for the World Championships. The event was sponsored by Evan S. Brown, the Gamma Phi Circus, Illinois State University, the School of Kinesiology and Recreation and Extended University. Following the competition, the Gamma Phi Circus put on a spectacular performance that included a wide variety of acts and disciplines. A good time was had by all. |
